Rural Missions

Housing Workcamp Calendar:
May-June, 2008

We Build With Love!

Volunteers, young and older, skilled and unskilled are needed by the Rural Mission to assist very low income families and individuals in the rural Sea Island area in obtaining and enjoying decent and safe housing. Mission and outreach projects can be requested for a day, a weekend or longer to repair, rehabilitate and replace severely substandard and deplorable housing conditions. As you demonstrate to a needy family that someone does indeed care, you receive the blessings of deeper faith and appreciation. With a decent home comes hope.

"... In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." Mathew: 25:40

Repairs to a roof, siding, porch and steps

Volunteers are needed to assist the following families in obtaining a safe and adequate home:
  1. Constructing a new home on Scott White Road, Town of Hollywood
This elderly lady's home burned last year and many volunteers have joined with her family to replace the home. This work has progressed very well and the home is ready for interior painting and trim work.

  2. Continuing repairs for an elderly couple in the Red Top Community
Volunteers have completed much work toward a rehab of much of this older home. A bathroom renovation remains to be completed.

  3. Extensive repairs needed for this elderly resident's home near Boy Scout Road, Wadmalaw Island.
The kitchen of this older home is in very poor condition and will require a lot of repair and replacement.

  4. Elderly couple near Old Pond Road, Johns Island needs help.
This home is in poor condition and will require a lot of inside renovation to make it safe and livable.

  5. Elderly couple near Main Road, Johns Island has been blessed with major repairs to their home, but some final work remains.
Extensive repairs have been completed for this older home by many volunteers. The remaining work includes replacement and painting of the soffit overhang beneath the roof.

  6. Work has just begun for this older couple on Wadmalaw Island and will require many volunteers over a period of time.
This older home in very poor condition and needs extensive renovation including roof repairs, well-pump repair, plumbing, interior walls, floors and ceilings and kitchen repairs.

Several of these owner occupied homes will require extensive rehabilitation and repairs to make them livable and safe, although families and elderly residents continue to live in these homes the best they can. Work plans for these repairs have been prepared to allow volunteer groups to work a day, two days or longer on different elements of the repairs.
