Rural Mission Volunteers Have a Great Summer!Summer is winding down and the hundreds of youth and adult volunteers who have come to the Rural Mission to serve are thinking about returning to school and the other activities that occupy their lives. They return with a stronger faith and a greater understanding and appreciation for how fortunate they are. They leave the Sea Islands with many blessings and benefits from their hard work ... roofs repaired, windows and doors fixed, porches and handicap ramps built and homes newly painted. They also leave behind families and elderly residents who are very grateful for their caring and love. They have shared their faith and shared their life stories, each encouraging the other and all gaining mutual respect and understanding. The recipient and the volunteers have each learned from the other and each has ministered to the other.
This year has been no different from the past several years. By the end of 2008, repair and major rehab will have been completed on 50 to 55 very low income homes. Two new homes will have been substantially completed. Over 1,100 volunteers, young and older, will have answered the call to serve and to care.
Please consider volunteering when you can for housing repair and rehab projects. This website contains an update on ongoing home projects that need to be completed. Please call and ask about volunteering at (843) 768-1720.
Photos on this web page are of the contribution of First Broad Street UMC, Kingsport, Tennessee. A Rural Mission dedicated Workcamp family member for nearly three decades, this youth group and their many adult leaders and parents again worked hard to help families gain a better life. Arriving in June, 2008, the group enjoyed tremendous fellowship, faith experiences and caring as they worked on several homes and blessed these families and elderly residents with their caring and energy. |
